Located in Keene, New Hampshire, Slate Roof Films is the full-service production company of director/editor Meagan and director/cinematographer Bryant. They specialize in documentary style films and live in a yellow 150-year old Victorian home with a slate roof.

Like many other professional creatives, their previous logo had been thrown together one weekend out of necessity. After several successful projects and a growing client list, they approached Liminal East for a logo redesign and supporting visual identity that matched the quality of their work.

Creative Brief
& Concepts

Slate Roof Films is genuine, authentic, and a talented storyteller with a strong sense of empathy. Initial concepts explored marks that were simple, unique, and avoided overly used and cliche visual references to film and video. Inspired by the name, we explored the themes of tile, overlap, and repetition.

Extra consideration was given to the logo’s animation potential, legibility at different sizes and legibility over images. Lastly, Slate Roof Films requested some COLOR, and not just one. An interesting color palette should bring life and energy to the brand and pay homage to the yellow studio.

Chosen Direction

The primary mark, which doubles as a photo cropping device, pays homage to the company’s name and home. Formed by three roof silhouettes rotated around a central triangle, the components respectfully represent 1) Slate Roof Films, 2) its partners, 3) clients, and 4) finished projects.

A colorful retro palette adds a fun and funky personality without distracting from client work. Throw in an icon set formed by overlapping shapes and a gradient overlay for non-client imagery…and Slate Roof Films finally has a visual brand worthy of the work they produce.

Website Design

The overlapping and tiled theme carries through the website.

One of the early website designs relied mainly on the palette’s neutral tones. The intent was to let the finished videos shine, but we lost too much of the Slate Roof Films personality. We applied the color palette on a second pass to the non-portfolio pages and the results were spot on.
